This video i show the steps i took to build a boom crutch for my 1987 precision daysailer 1. the cheap lumber cost me $3.46. the hardware was about $.75. the varnish i had laying around from other. If the crutch is outside of the transom, (attaching to the rudder gudgeons), then you will need our boom crutch modification. if your boom crutch is outside of the transom, we add a reinforced opening with velcro closure to pass the boom crutch through.. sailboat boom crutch W/out measuring mine (not immediately possible), i'd say you want the boom crutch to be long enough to make the boom level when it's attached to the mast. so the next time you rig your boat measure this distance et voila. i tried to make one using 1" pcv tubing but this was too flexible. they cost about $40 from flying scot.. The factory running rigging on most small sailboats, including the catalina 22, is minimal to keep the price low. that is, the halyards and any other control lines are only long enough to fasten them to nearby cleats. convenience and trimming for performance are a luxury reserved for larger, more expensive sailboats. it works okay, but….
