sailboat boom kicker For reference, with the sail flaked, using about 10 to 12 lbs.(4.5 to 5.4 kgs) to pull the aft end of the boom down seems like a good balance between boom support versus tension required to pull on the vang. more support may be desired with a bimini or if crew use the boom for support with the sail down.. A rigid vang is probably double the price (even from garhauer) and the installation would be a bit more involved. installing a boomkicker is a snap (1-2 h max, with no need to unstep the mast, remove the boom or sail etc.)..
