Sailboat Boom Kicker

sailboat boom kicker

Even if the boom just slides onto a pin at the gooseneck, or can roll, the boomkicker can not push the boom back or restrict it from rolling around its central axis to follow the sail. when installed, the boomkicker is straight and the boom should be positioned above the usual sailing height.. I sail solo and i'm concerned about raising the main with the pigtail attached until i get back to the cockpit. tarkus doesn't seem to point into the wind for long. i wanted to ask if a boom kicker from cd will actually hold the boom up once i disconnect pigtail. thx. A boom vang (us) or kicking strap (uk) is a line or piston system on a sailboat used to exert downward force on the boom and thus control the shape of the sail. the collins english dictionary defines it as "a rope or tackle extended from the boom of a fore-and-aft mainsail to a deck fitting of a vessel when running, in order to keep the boom from riding up"..

sailboat boom kicker For reference, with the sail flaked, using about 10 to 12 lbs.(4.5 to 5.4 kgs) to pull the aft end of the boom down seems like a good balance between boom support versus tension required to pull on the vang. more support may be desired with a bimini or if crew use the boom for support with the sail down.. A rigid vang is probably double the price (even from garhauer) and the installation would be a bit more involved. installing a boomkicker is a snap (1-2 h max, with no need to unstep the mast, remove the boom or sail etc.)..
